Priorities identified to address safety and accessibility

Thanks to a $2M grant from the State of California, the Clairemont Swimming Pool will receive much needed attention to address deferred maintenance and other capital improvements. The grant money will benefit not only the pool, but the adjacent park and recreation center as well. Construction is set to begin in early November 2024, with a tentative re-open date of June 2025.

The Clairemont Swimming Pool opened in February 1979, and the lifespan of the pool is over. We started the Clairemont Pool Booster Club to advocate for this facility that is at the heart of our community. We saw the pool’s infrastructure crumble over time, and there seemed to be nothing that could be done. However through many conversations and correspondences with Aquatic staff and Park & Recreation Department staff, a large portion of the grant funding are set to address major repairs on the list below during the scheduled pool closure, such as:

• Replace entire pool deck
• Refurbish the deck’s cantilevers
• New plaster for the entire pool interior (floors and walls)
• Remove chainlink fence and concrete base and replace with new, modern parameter fencing
• Improve spectator areas
• Upgrade pool filtration and heating systems to increase reliable service to the community

We are excited to see this project move forward using grant funding from the $2M award from the State of California to the South Clairemont Recreation Center and the adjacent Clairemont Swimming Pool. This community investment in capital improvements, the most recent upgrades of the pool site, and the full restoration of the youth recreational water polo and swim team programs is a signal of the City of San Diego Park & Recreation Department’s commitment to improving access to aquatic facilities and programs.
